Words of Wisdom from KSAC Volunteers

Ashley
My name is Ashley. I am a 2nd year Fleming Student in the Social Service Worker program. I have only been doing Crisis Line for about a month and a half, but my experience so far in doing crisis work, has been a very rewarding and invaluable experience that has prepared me for when I do have the opportunity to work out in the field of social work.
The KSAC staff members are an awesome bunch, very support during the training and I have acquired a lot of wisdom from these women. Taking College courses has prepared me for the majority of things I may encounter, but I believe it is the actual hands-on practical experience (either by doing Crisis Line work and/or going on placement and working with actual living, breathing people) that will be the best learning tool.
When I look back at the experience I will have acquired 'by doing', I will remember my wonderful experience in working as a KSAC volunteer and the lives that I touched - just by 'being there'.

Serena

Volunteer of 1 & 1/2 years. Volunteering at KSAC has kept me going through the though times.

I have a tendency to overload my days with various volunteer and social activities. When working the crisis line, I am grounded in the moment with the caller.
This time is golden to me - I have learned sooo much!

Alison

I have been a volunteer at the Sexual Assault Centre for 2 years now. It has been probably one of the most rewarding volunteer jobs I have ever had.
The main focus I have at the Centre is volunteering on the Crisis Line. After completing a call, and assisting a fellow female in need, I have a feeling of great satisfaction.
The Centre offers the Crisis line workers monthly meetings, so workers can show each other support and assistance with the crisis calls.
The Centre also has information nights and special workshops, which is a wonderful way to meet all the new people within the Centre as well as see the other ones you've known from the past.
All in all, the experience has been one I will never regret. I would encourage anyone who has time to come and get involved!

Corina

My name is Corina, my hair is curly, I pour a good black and tan and make a mean breakfast.

I have been volunteering at KSAC for a good couple of years. I've carried the Crisis-line beeper and sat on the Board of Directors, for which I am a richer and smarter and a more skilled person than I was before.
I am no less angry at the sick world we live in, but I have been lucky to meet some very cool women. KSAC staff members are amazing, the volunteers are incredible; the work we do is important and together we do good work!

Sandi
I am a Trent Student, majoring in Psychology and Women's Studies, and have been an Active Volunteer at the Centre for over a year.
My goal is to eventually have my own practice, specializing in counselling women. Theory has its place in the learning process, and I've gained a lot of important information through school.
But my work with the crisis line and other aspects of the Centre has taught me invaluable knowledge through real experience.
The women who staff the Centre full time have contributed to this greatly and are always open and welcoming. I know I'll look back on my work here as an indispensable stepping-stone to my final career goals.
