The Facts
 
Sexual assault happens to 1 in 4 Canadian women at some point in their lives.
About 69% of sexual assaults are committed by someone known to the victim.
49% of sexual assaults occur in broad daylight.
80% of sexual assaults occur in the home.
50 %of offenders are married or living common law, have children and are considered responsible members of the community.
Injury occurs in approximately 11 % of sexual assaults.
Only 6 % of all sexual assaults are reported to police.
In Canada, in 1998, 82.6% of victims in reported cases of sexual assault were women; 98% of the accused were men.
In 70% of the reported cases of sexual assault, the victim knew the accused; 62% of the victims were under the age of 18.
1 out of every 3 female children, and 1 out of every 5 male children in Canada will be sexually abused before they reach adulthood.
Children with disabilities are 10 time more vulnerable to sexual abuse than non-disabled children.
According to the Committee on Sexual Offenses Against Children and Youth (commonly known as The Badgley Committee) 98% of abusers are male and most victims are female.
Many survivors, estimates are as high as 50%, do not remember the abuse until years after it has occurred. Usually something in adulthood will trigger the memory. Some are never able to clearly recall the abuse.
A recent Canadian survey (1991) of women serving federal sentences in penitentiaries notes that 53% of the women incarcerated stated that they had been sexually abused at some stage in their lives, most commonly during childhood or adolescence.
Numerous studies have been discussed about the direct relationship between child sexual abuse and adolescent/adult prostitution. The estimate range from 76 to 90% of Sex Trade Workers having a history of child sexual abuse, the most common form being incest (the sexual abuse of a child by a family member).
16% of all Canadian women (1.7 million) have been involved in at least one incident of sexual or physical assault by a date or boyfriend since the age of 16.
Half of all women who reported an incident of dating violence were between the ages of 18-34.
24% of women 18-24 years had been sexually and/or physically assaulted by a date or boyfriend. This figure is 50% higher than the national figure or 16%.
For single women 25-34 years of age, most of who have been dating for longer periods of time, the percentage ever assaulted by a date is 29%.
35% of girls and 16% of boys between grades 7-12 had been sexually and/or physically abused.
Among girls surveyed, 17 year olds experienced the highest rate of sexual abuse at 20%.
Legally, there is no longer such a thing as rape. Rape is now referred to as sexual assault.
Males and females can now be charged with sexual assault.
Spouses can now be charged with sexual assault.
